San Carlos approves law banning the use of herbicides to land clearing, sidewalks and gutters

noticia_herbicida 11The City Council approved on Tuesday, 8, a bill authored by Councilman Lineu Navarro (PT) which prohibits the use of any type of herbicide (mata-mato) for land cleaning, sidewalks, guides and gutters within the urban perimeter and urban peri of the city. “In addition to being an unlawful practice, pesticide use within cities affects human and animal health, in addition to drastically affecting the environment (waters, solo and ar). Now we have to wait for the law to be published and make it a reality ”.

Since the Green Revolution, in the decade 1950, the traditional agricultural production process has undergone drastic changes, with the insertion of new technologies, aimed at the extensive production ofcommodities agricultural. These technologies involve, almost mostly, the extensive use of pesticides, with the purpose of controlling diseases and increasing productivity.

According to current legislation, pesticides are products and agents of physical processes, chemical or biological, used in production sectors, storage and processing of agricultural products, pasture, forest protection, native or planted, and other ecosystems and urban environments, water and industrial.

The pesticide aims to change the composition of flora or fauna, in order to preserve them from the harmful action of living beings considered harmful. Pesticides are also considered substances and products used as defoliants, desiccants, growth stimulators and inhibitors.

The behavior of pesticides in the environment is quite complex. When a pesticide is used, regardless of the mode of application, has great potential to reach the soil and waters, mainly due to winds and rainwater, that promote drift, washing the treated leaves, leaching and erosion. Besides, whatever the way of pesticides in the environment, invariably man is his potential recipient.

The complexity of assessing the behavior of a pesticide, once applied, it is due to the need to consider the influence of the agents that act by causing its physical displacement and its chemical and biological transformation. Substances undergo physical processes, or chemical or biological, which can modify their properties and influence their behavior, including the formation of by-products with properties absolutely distinct from the initial product and whose damage to health or the environment is also differentiated.
